The Catholic Biblical Association of India (CBAI) convened its Annual General Conference 2025 at Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bengaluru, on 7–8 November 2025. The two-day gathering brought together around 85 eminent biblical scholars from across India to deliberate on the theme "Right Governance in the Bible: Reading from Indian Ecclesio-Political Context."

The conference aimed to explore the theological foundations of governance as reflected in Sacred Scripture, trace their evolution across the Old and New Testaments, and contextualize them for the contemporary world. By doing so, it sought to establish biblically rooted parameters for evaluating systems of governance, both within ecclesial structures and in broader social and political contexts.

The academic sessions featured ten scholarly papers presented by distinguished Indian biblical scholars. The proceedings opened with a Keynote Address prepared by Most Rev. Joseph Pamplany, Archbishop of Tellicherry, and a Felicitations Address by Most Rev. Peter Abir, Bishop of Sultanpet. Both prelates underscored the enduring relevance of Scripture in shaping moral integrity and participatory governance in today's world.

This year's conference also marked the completion of two fruitful terms of leadership by Rev. Fr. Joy Philip CMI, who was warmly acknowledged for his visionary service and dedicated efforts in elevating the standards of biblical scholarship in India. Through his commitment to mentoring young scholars, Fr. Joy Philip has significantly contributed to the growth of an intellectually vibrant and theologically sound biblical community in the country.

New Executive Committee

The gathering also witnessed the election of a new Executive Committee to guide the Association in the years ahead:

  • President: Rev. Fr. Vincent Sequeira (Diocese of Mangalore)
  • Vice President: Sr. Johncy Choorathottiyil SMI
  • Secretary: Fr. Jaya Pradeep
  • Treasurer: Sr. Smitha Gabriel ASI
  • Members: Fr. Maria Michael Felix, Fr. Antony Madalaimuthu, Fr. Victor Rodrigues

The Association extended its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the new leadership team, expressing confidence that under the stewardship of Rev. Fr. Vincent Sequeira, the CBAI will continue to advance the mission of biblical scholarship and inspire deeper engagement with the Word of God in the life of the Church and society.
